Raised Donut Doughnut
Posted in Bread Making Items | Comments Off
Can someone please help me with this math word problem?
For a fundraiser, Mr. G sold donuts. He sold 3 times as many doughnuts at $1 each than she did the next day at fifty cents. She raised a total of $437.50
1. Assign variables
2. Create an equation involving both amounts and the total
3. Solve
Lola = L
Dave = D
L = D + $50 or L – D = $50
L+ D = $200
add the 2 equations together and you get:
2L = $250 so L= $125
therefore D = $75
check the numbers and yup they work!
====
Day 1: total doughnuts sold = X
Day 2: total doughnuts sold = X/3
sum raised: $437.50 = X * $1 + X/3 * $0.50
$437.50 = ((3X * $1)+(X * $0.50))/3
$437.50 * 3 = 3.5 X
$437.50 * 3/3.5 = X = 375
check the numbers to make sure the totals addup (they do!)
